Hi, my name is Gena Jorgensen. I hold a Master of Social Work degree from Michigan State University with a Specialization in Clinical Social Work with Families. I have undergone extensive training in play therapy, trauma-focused therapy, crisis intervention, and motivational interviewing. My experience includes 19 years working with children and families within the child welfare system dealing with child protective services, foster care, adoption, the juvenile justice system, and human trafficking.

I work with children as young as age 3 through adulthood utilizing sand tray and directive play therapy techniques, like creative/expressive arts, storytelling, sensory play, games, and technology-based activities, as a means to help process trauma and life changes. For minors who have experienced trauma and have a supportive caregiver willing to participate in the therapeutic process, I offer trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), which includes individual sessions with the child, individual sessions with the caregiver(s), and conjoint sessions with the individual and caregiver(s). Other approaches I utilize include Cognitive Processing Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Prolonged Exposure Therapy, and Solution-Focused Therapy.

I am heavily involved in advocacy work related to human trafficking and the rise of sextortion, especially among school-aged children. I have experience working with hundreds of victims of sexual assault, childhood abuse/neglect, human trafficking, and gang violence, as well as working with youth struggling with family changes, life transitions, Internet/social media/pornography addictions, and sports performance stress. I believe a good fit between the therapist and client is vital to the success of the therapeutic process. The first couple sessions will involve building a foundation for that relationship, completing an assessment, and developing an individualized treatment plan.
